Halloween Eco Crafts: Handprint Spiders.

Simple to do but AMAZING for developing the all-important 'pincer grip' in toddlers.

I avoid plastic googly eyes as they are single use and ultimately most end up in waterways / oceans / fish bellies as plastic pollution.

In this case, my alternative of hole punched paper eyes are better for toddlers (as well as better for the environment) because you can draw a pupil on both sides of each tiny paper circle - meaning they can be stuck on with whichever side facing up = less toddler frustration.

If you are doing this craft with an older (school-aged) child then just mark the pupil dots on one side of the circle to give them an extra challenge, as they'll have to manoeuvre the paper cut eyes to be the right side up.

If you haven't got a black pencil crayon to add the central eye dots, then use a biro (not a regular felt tip) to avoid smudging with glue-y fingers.

On that note, the glue we use is Coccoina (a natural and plastic-free alternative to Pritt).

Also we use 24mm wide brown paper tape to attach the cotton string offcuts to the spiders.

The best bit of this activity was the toddler continually requesting "more eyes!" when adorning their big paint-splat spider (having great fun whilst covertly getting A LOT of pincer-grip practice) - and I could just keep on hole punching eyes using white paper from the scrap box. Here are the resulting spiders...
