25 Steps to a Clean + Healthy Home

Step 12 = Plan where to dry bath towels.

It may be luxurious to wrap yourself in a 'bathsheet' sized towel, after a shower or a bath, but it really is hard finding somewhere in the house to dry huge towels. If you are going to invest in new towels, think about buying the next size down from 'bathsheet' ones.

It is so important to dry bath towels properly. Damp towels hanging around are the idea breeding ground for smelly bacteria, which you then end up spreading over yourself (making you smell like you've not washed properly) when you use a poorly-cared-for towel.

So, plan where to daily dry your family's bath towels. Ideally there should be air flow (a locked-open-a-jar window) and each towel should be stretched out in a single layer. We use a chunky curtain pole in one sunny room (when the curtains are open) for this purpose, plus a couple of 1m long metal towel rails (from Amazon) attached to the wall on the landing, where air circulates from up-stairs and down-stairs.

Wash towels regularly at 60 C (or at 40 C if you are a Napisan powder convert) - if you mistreat your towels then washing weekly is a must, if you carefully hang them up to dry thoroughly after every use, then washing them fortnightly will suffice. So caring for your towels daily will save you laundry-time and laundry-effort.
