25 Steps to a Clean + Healthy Home

Step 7 = Choose your cleaning spray with care.

Check that your bathroom and kitchen cleaning sprays are fit for purpose. Too many homes use a spray without much thought about it, for example, 'Flash Bathroom' spray sounds like it is equipped to deal with bathroom germs, when actually it is just soapy foam and not antibacterial...

I like to have as few different cleaning products as possible in the house (yes, that statement is hard to believe if you have read my previous posts which show that I am 'a little' more germ-alert than most).

Having just a few (really well-chosen) products saves time (no need to hunt around a cluttered cupboard for what you want), saves money (choose a multi-tasker and buy far fewer products), saves space (no need to store loads of different bottles and sprays in your precious kitchen and bathroom cupboards) and saves the planet (by reducing waste plastic bottles in landfill).

My vote for a kitchen and bathroom cleaner (buy two separate bottles, please don't take bathroom germs into the kitchen on the base of a spray bottle!) goes to EcoEgg's Concentrated Multi-purpose Antibacterial Cleaner. Yes a 1 litre bottle costs £20, but it is CONCENTRATED - it dilutes to refill the 500ml spray bottle 80 (yes, eighty!) times. You only get one spray bottle with the concentrated cleaner, but you can buy additional spray bottles for £2.99 each - which is important as you should have a separate spray bottle for the kitchen and a separate spray bottle for the bathroom(s). The cleaner is made from plant extracts and has a subtle lemon smell, which even I don't mind. The bottle of concentrate will last ages, drastically reducing the amount of plastic cleaning bottles you send to landfill - saving the planet and saving you money.

Another great anti-bacterial cleaner which is planet-friendly, is the 'Bio-D All Purpose Sanitiser'. You can find it in many zero-waste refill shops. So once you use up the contents of your first bottles of Bio-D (one for the bathroom and one for the kitchen remember!) then you can take them to a refill shop and fill up your original bottles.

If you prefer to receive zero-waste refills by post, then consider Iron & Velvet, they sell their 'Coconut and Lime' and their 'Ylang Ylang' antibacterial surface cleaners in ingenious water-soluble-sachets - they require you to provide your own 500ml bottle, ensuring that the company is sending out completely plastic free products. Iron & Velvet's antibacterial surface cleaner costs £10 for 5 sachets (plus free delivery).

So, use up your current cleaning sprays and then splash out on a bottle of concentrated 'EcoEgg Concentrated Antibacterial Cleaner' (plus an extra spray bottle, or better still, re-use one that you already have), or (if you find a zero waste refill shop close by) get yourself a couple of bottles of Bio-D All Purpose Sanitiser or order some Iron & Velvet antibacterial surface cleaner sachets.Whichever you choose you'll be looking after your household and the planet.
