Step 24 - Embrace your natural colour or use henna.
Regular hair dye works by lifting the outer cuticle of the hair and colouring underneath it. The cuticle never, ever smooths properly back down again, making hair look dull / damaged. Adding lots of moisturising conditioner will stick the cuticle down to some extent, but it will also weigh down your hair, which will require more washing - something to avoid if you are being kind to your hair!
If hair dye is something you can't live without then consider switching to henna.
Henna dye coats the hair cuticle rather than penetrating it. So if you really can't avoid dyeing your hair, (and you are feeling brave, as it is messy) give it a try. Lush stores sell solid blocks of henna, in minimal paper packaging. Once you have chopped, warmed and rehydrated the henna, (and wrapped your shoulders in an old towel and put moisturiser on your ears and hairline and put on rubber gloves such as these compostable gloves) you coat your hair with the strong "earthy"-smelling gunk and cover it (old towels are essential!) Apparently if you leave it on for at least 3 hours it will even colour grey hair - it won't hide the grey but it will make the grey-parts a vibrant, stand-out colour (there are black / brown / red blocks of henna to choose from).
If that sounds like too much faff then maybe it is time to try embracing your natural hair colour...
