There are refill stations popping up as the trend for zero-waste shopping grows. Once your existing product bottles are empty, wash them well and take them along to be refilled with an eco-version of your favourite product.
I do like an antibacterial spray in the kitchen and one in the bathroom - Bio D makes an antibacterial cleaning spray, called 'All Purpose Sanitizer' which can be refilled at certain zero waste shops, the contact details are listed here for you to check stock ahead of any visit that you make.
If getting to a zero-waste refill station isn't convenient (or if it would require a special journey out of your way) then Splosh, Ocean Saver , Iron & Velvet and Bide provide the means to refill-by-post.
Splosh sends out an initial plastic bottle (if you want one) of whichever product you buy, then you just order concentrated foil/plastic pouches of refill, which once used up are designed to be posted back to the company (in the neatly designed packaging in which they came through the letterbox) for Splosh to reprocess into usable plastic items. So this isn't a plastic-free option (except for the dishwasher tablets which are entirely plastic free and excellent), but it is a closed-loop option. I adore their mint toilet cleaner, unscented glass cleaner, lime washing up liquid and their stain remover. Their excellent all-in-one dishwasher tablets are in a bio-degradable film which dissolves in the dishwasher along with the tablet - the dishwasher tablets are delivered 'naked' in cardboard packaging. Splosh sell many other refillable products too, which I haven't tried, including hand wash, laundry detergent, bathroom cleaner, kitchen cleaner and floor cleaner. If the bottle is re-used so much that it breaks, then Splosh will replace it. Most of the Splosh products are manufactured in Wales, some are made in other parts of the UK and the dishwasher tablets and laundry powder are made in Europe.
Ocean Saver also sends out initial plastic bottles (if you want one) and then posts out refills, which are concentrated product encased in genius water-soluble pods. They have a multi-purpose cleaner, kitchen cleaner, bathroom cleaner, floor cleaner and glass cleaner. This is a truly zero-waste option, as long as you re-use the bottle for ever more (if the bottle breaks or wears out then Ocean Saver will send you a replacement once you have sent back the original). I am not sure where the Ocean Saver products are manufactured, I am awaiting email confirmation. Ocean Saver products are made in China, although they are looking at manufacturing possibilities closer to home.
Iron & Velvet also sell their cleaning products in ingenious water-soluble-sachets and they require you to provide your own 500ml bottle (or 250ml for oven and floor cleaners), ensuring that the company is sending out completely plastic free products. I like the sound of the 'Coconut and Lime' antibacterial surface cleaner (very affordable at 5 sachets for around £10 plus free delivery). I love that the products are all made in the UK.
Bide or 'Bide Planet' sell non-toxic cleaning product refills in compostable packaging, all made by disadvantaged women in their own homes in the UK - a 'cottage industry' model. I am yet to try their washing up powder (which you dissolve using hot water). I also like the look of their toilet bombs. The dishwasher powder doesn't tempt me as I prefer a rinse aid and salt combo (as offered by Splosh), but I love everything else about this company. Iron and Velvet products are available via Bide too (for the same price as on the Iron and Velvet website - those guys really support what Bide is doing!)
Keeping the same plastic bottles for ever-more in your cleaning kit (with a promise of replacements if needed) seems like such a sensible idea, I really hope that refilling becomes mainstream....spread the word!
