Another plastic-encased daily essential is deodorant. Finding an effective alternative has involved trial and error (again!) Here is the shortlist...
1. 'Earth Conscious Peppermint & Spearmint Strong Protection' deodorant stick comes in a cardboard tube and you apply it like a 'normal' deodorant. It is not recommended for those with sensitive skin, but I've been fine with it. I tried this one after not being happy with other brands in hot, sweaty, summer weather. This one works.
2. 'Kutis Lemongrass & Tea Tree' deodorant stick is in cardboard, applies easily, smells lovely and works well but not well enough for height-of-summer heat. I would happily use this Spring, Autumn and Winter and then switch to the Earth Conscious Strong Protection in Summer.
3. I've not actually tried 'Ben and Anna' deodorant but I'm reliably informed by a good friend that they work well and that this Nordic Timber scent is a hit with her husband.
4. Again, I've not tried this (yet!) but 'Elsa's Natural Deodorant Cream' in a tin looks good for travelling (you could pop it into your washbag without worrying about a cardboard-outer getting wet) and good for encouraging pre-teens to use it, due to the cute packaging design...
When you are initially trying out a brand of plastic-free deodorant, I suggest applying it with your fingertips (rather than rolling the tube against your underarms) so then if you don't get on with it, you will be able to pass-it-on (in a fairly hygienic state) for a friend to try.
Just remember that 'deodorant' is not the same as 'anti-perspirant' - so if you have a very sweaty job, have to wear synthetic fibre tops for work, have a long and hot commute or if you are just someone who 'glows' a lot, then this might not be a zero-waste switch for you.
