52Eco#35 Bake your own bread.

We bake bread just when we need it (well, the breadmaker does!)

Any bread that is left over is sliced and frozen (home-made bread needs eating or freezing on the day as it isn't full of preservatives). We have found that sourdough bread (available in this dry packet mix from Tesco) does seem to keep better than regular white bread, and it tastes delicious.

We use 500g packet bread-mixes from the supermarket, which come in paper packaging. This has completely eliminated the endless plastic bread bags we used to generate.

If you don't own a breadmaker yet (the simpler the model the better in my opinion) then maybe you should put one on your wish list...

With packet bread mix / yeast not always easily available, then consider spending 10 days nurturing a sourdough starter (aka a home-made yeast colony) - you'll then be able to bake fuss-free delicious sourdough bread and many other treats (including pancakes, brownies, cinnamon swirl buns, cruffins, babka loaf and Belgian buns) - yum!
