52Eco#8 Say no to disposable cutlery. ***Sew-along Video***

Plastic spoons. Plastic stirrers. Plastic knives and forks. Plastic straws. These are offered to us by virtually every cafe and lunch-stop. Disposable cutlery is designed to be used once, yet each item takes hundreds of years to decompose. What madness! Wooden disposable cutlery is a waste of trees, so don't be fooled by it.

Luckily a ban on the above single use plastic items is coming into force by 2021.

In the meantime we can do our bit to keep these bits of pointless plastic out of landfill by getting used to taking cutlery from home, out with us on excursions.

A fabric cutlery pouch comes in very handy - it protects the implements when they are in your bag and it contains any mess once they've been used. If you keep the pouch in your bag, ready-stocked then you will always have cutlery on hand. If you have two of the cutlery wraps, then you can use one and wash one, in with the usual laundry (if you add Napisan). Like any change you undertake, making it as easy as possible for yourself will help the change become a habit.

I made the cutlery pouch pictured above, as I couldn't find a UK-made one that suited what I was after (washable, patterned to hide marks, wrap-style, affordable). If you would like to to make your own cutlery wrap then have a look at my real-time 'sew-along' video on You Tube, by clicking HERE.
