52Eco#42 Buy long-lasting versions of often-used items.

When often-used things break beyond repair, I try and replace them with long-lasting versions. For example, pegs. I used to buy new sets of plastic pegs approximately every two years, as they would periodically snap and break (due to the sun exposure, I imagine).

Last time around, I purchased large, robust, wooden pegs from Amazon - they are still going strong after 2 years. None have broken beyond repair. They are each a hefty 10cm long and strong enough to hold bedsheets on the washing line in windy conditions.

As the pegs are wooden, I don't leave them out on the line when not in use, (meaning in winter they stay inside most of the time) or I fear they would go green and slimy - not what you want coming into contact with clean laundry! If you have read my 52HOME blog posts, you will already know that I am a stickler for properly looking after the stuff we already have. This extra effort saves money and reduces waste in the long run.

Every few years my trusty plastic washing line would also snap (despite me buying various supposedly 'reinforced' versions). So a few years ago I invested in 'Gripple' wire and tensioners from Amazon- made for supporting garden plants but excellent for a super-strong washing line. The lady I spoke to on their customer helpline said that she herself had Gripple wire strung up as a washing line. It is excellent, no snapping or sagging (if it did sag you could tighten by pulling on the 1-way tensioners).

Another item which this 'buy well' concept applies to in our household, is the cafetiere or 'coffee press'. I don't drink coffee but there is a coffee fan in the house and I have so far managed to break two glass cafetieres (yes, two). Oops. So now we own a Cafe Ole stainless steel cafetiere.

It's worth mentioning here to always check whether there is a reusable alternative to something that previously you've only thought of as single-use.... I was so pleased to find out that tie wraps / cable ties come in reusable versions! You'll need to search for: 'releasable cable ties' or 'reusable cable ties' or 'adjustable cable ties' or 'beaded cable ties' or 'gardening cable ties' to find them online, or pop into your local garden centre.

Carefully buying items that can be reused and will last well (when their predecessors demise) helps keen future tat out of landfill.
