This year on 'National Clean Out Your Bookcase Day' (20th Feb) the older child and I looked through all of the toddler's board books to see what - or rather whom - we could see.
Lots of books for babies and toddlers have animals as the main characters, but go and check through the board books you own which have humans in. Do the people in your books all look like you and your family? Which ones show a diversity of faces, bodies and ways of being?
Of the board books we own, those which do show a variety of ethnicities and skin colours are pictured below. We adore: Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle, Every Little Thing by Cedella Marley, Peepo Baby by Georgie Birkett and What a Wonderful World by Bob Thele and Tim Hopgood. The words / rhymes / lyrics AND the pictures are brilliant in all four of these books.
Other board books I'd love to read to my kids include...
Everybody Belongs by Lorna Freytag
